SERIAN, Sept 23: Siburan will be elevated into a full district soon, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Currently, Siburan Town, located along the busy Kuching-Serian Road is a thriving sub-district with booming population due to the spillover effect of rural-urban migration that has affected Kuching.

“We are studying it under SS (State Secretary) office on the possibility of upgrading Siburan sub-district into full district. But we have to look into the overall in terms of population and boundary in that particular area,” Abang Johari said at a press conference after a meet-the-people session at SJK Chung Hua multipurpose hall here today.

He added that besides upgrading Siburan into a full district, the committee also decided that Tebedu customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex will have a new border post to tap border trading with Kalimantan.

“We are working with the Indonesian government. As we have planned to have a trade office in Pontianak, that will enable us to have close border trade cooperation with Kalimantan and our side through SOSEK-MALINDO (Sosial Ekonomi Malaysia Indonesia),” he said.

The Chief Minister also revealed that the State Development Coordination Committee on project meeting which was held at a hotel here today also discussed the overall projects in the division worth over RM400 mil.

“Overall, we are happy with all the government projects within Serian Division amounting to over RM400 million,” he said.
