SIBU, Dec 27: A woman has suffered a financial loss of nearly RM9,000 after falling victim to a direct sales scam involving a corset.

According to a news report by TVS, the incident began when the woman was enticed by a free trial offer for the corset, shared by a local influencer on social media, which seemed convincing.

Lucas Lau, chairman of Majlis Tindakan Pengguna Negara (MTPN) Sibu Branch, said that the victim agreed to try the corset after being persuaded by the advertisement promising extraordinary results with just one use.

“The appointment between the victim and the sales agent was arranged by the influencer for the free trial that was offered,” he explained during a press conference today.

However, after trying the corset, Lau said the victim was forced to buy it without being informed of the actual price. She only realised the full cost when she received an invoice for nearly RM9,000 on the same day.

Lau said the victim felt frustrated and disappointed by the unfair treatment, prompting her to file a complaint with MTPN.

“MTPN received the complaint about the incident on December 13 and assisted the victim in filing an official complaint with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) via e-KPDN on December 24,” he added.

MTPN has also referred to the direct sales invoice along with other evidence for further action.

He reminded the public to familiarise themselves with the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme Act 1993 (Act 500) to protect their rights as consumers.

“Consumers have the right to choose products and services at competitive prices, with guaranteed quality,” he emphasised.

MTPN has urged affected consumers to lodge complaints immediately to ensure appropriate action is taken. — DayakDaily
