SIBU, July 26: The public in Sibu have been urged to refrain from open burning as Sarawak is currently experiencing hot and dry weather conditions.
Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sibu Zone 4 chief Andy Alie emphasised that open burning could worsen the situation and pose a health risk to individuals with respiratory-related diseases.
“I remind the public not to engage in any open burning activities, especially in areas that could easily catch fire, such as peat land, garbage disposal sites, gardens, and farms,” he said when contacted today.
Andy also shared fire safety tips, urging the public to notify authorities if they observe open burning.
“Inform the fire department immediately in the event of a forest fire by calling 999 or contacting the nearest fire station. The public should always stay informed about the current situation through mass media and social media. When there is a fire, please evacuate the fire risk area,” he stressed.
He warned that the dry winds could make fires difficult to control.
“Uncontrolled and deliberate open burning activities can result in localised haze. Open burning will increase the air pollution index (IPU), which can be dangerous and cause health problems, especially among the elderly, in addition to polluting the environment,” he explained.
Andy also advised smokers not to discard cigarette butts on the roadside or in the bush.
“If it is necessary to carry out open burning activities for the opening of plantations, the company involved is required to first refer to the Department of Environment and the Natural Resources and Environment Board to obtain a special permit,” he said.
He also advised the public to take several measures during this period, including conserving water, drinking enough water, and reducing outdoor activities.
