Sibu Municipal Council forms Special Disaster Committee after town hit by freak storm

SIBU, April 26: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has established a Special Disaster Committee in preparation for future natural disasters.

This comes following the freak storm on April 6 which destroyed a number of public and private properties.

In his keynote address at the council full board meeting today, its chairman Councilor Clarence Ting said that the significant climate change taking place at the moment could contribute to the increase in the number of natural disasters.

According to him, the situation has prompted SMC to form the committee following the freak storm.

“The past disaster made us realise that this committee is a must, to be established under the council.

“When there is this committee, it can minimize the impact of a disaster affecting the public,” he said.

Ting informed that the committee will be chaired by himself and assisted by his deputy Councilor Mohammad Abdullah Izkandar Rosely.

He explained that the committee will also involve council members and other council staff.

The committee, he said, would draw up emergency measures as a precaution against natural disasters.
