SIBU, Feb 7: Some fire hydrants here have been found to be either partially or completely buried under asphalt roads.
Sibu MP Oscar Ling said during his visit to the Sungai Merah fire station here that when this happened, it caused the hydrants to lose their function of dispensing water for firefighting.
“This morning, I visited Sungai Merah Fire Station with my team to interact with the superiors. I was told that some fire hydrants were partially or completely blocked under the asphalt road during the road upgrading process, and it caused the equipment to lose the function of water distribution and firefighting,” he added.
Ling said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) needs to inform the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) if they find a fire hydrant during the road upgrading project so that they can move the fire hydrant if necessary.
The council, he stressed, will have to bear the cost of removing the fire hydrant.
“If the fire hydrant is blocked under the asphalt or cannot be activated, it will affect the emergency work when extinguishing a serious fire, the consequences are very serious,” he said.
Ling also advised the public to call Sibu Fire Station at 084-330343 instead of 999.
“When people call 999, the call will be connected to Melaka first, and then they will go round and round and finally call the Sibu fire department. This process is also very time consuming,” he said. — DayakDaily
