SIBU, Oct 3: What was supposed to be a good deal for a four-wheel drive vehicle ended up causing a local man to lose RM106,680 to a online car sale scam.
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 40-year-old victim’s ordeal started on Sept 16 when he saw a car sale advertisement on Facebook.
“As he was interested, he called the number listed in the advertisement to enquire. He was told of a 2023 Ford Ranger priced at RM97,800 and loan payment within 5 years of 1,630 per month,” said Zulkipli.
In order to entice the victim, the suspect lowered the price to RM85,000.
On Sept 21, the victim agreed to the suspect’s offer and submitted his wife’s personal information, a photocopy of her identity card and a picture of her driving licence to the suspect.
“After that he transferred RM106,680 in 24 transactions into four different local accounts,” he added.
However the suspect instructed the victim to transfer another RM7,800 supposedly as charges for the car delivery.
It was then that the victim realised he had been conned by the suspect and filed a police report on Tuesday (Oct 1).
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
