KUCHING, Nov 10: Sibu Jaya is stepping into its next phase of development, with plans to expand second-generation housing, business and industrial sectors, introduce renewable energy initiatives, and establish itself as a sports and recreation hub for the central region, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to Bernama, in his speech read by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee at the Sibu Jaya 30th Anniversary Celebration and Sibu Jaya Carnival Concert 2025 on Saturday night, Abang Johari highlighted the township has emerged as the new growth hub of central Sarawak after three decades of phased development.

He added that the Sarawak government is now focusing on the next stage of development for Sibu Jaya as the catalyst for growth in surrounding areas such as Kanowit, Song, Julau, Pakan and Dalat.
He described the 30th anniversary as “not just a look back at our journey but marks a new beginning to make Sibu Jaya a town of hope and progress for the people of Sarawak,” while expressing appreciation to the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Amcorp Group, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), and the local community.
With over 35,000 residents, more than 6,600 housing units, 384 commercial lots and 179 industrial sites developed, has grown from a low-cost housing area into a modern community and economic centre.
“Sibu Jaya today is strategically located. It not only serves as Sibu’s satellite town but has become a catalyst for growth in surrounding areas such as Kanowit, Song, Julau, Pakan and Dalat,” he emphasised.
The Premier also credited the township’s progress to the 2005 Sibu Jaya Master Plan and improved connectivity through the Durin Bridge, linking it to the Pan Borneo Highway and opening new economic and investment opportunities.
He said Sibu Jaya’s progress has also earned national and regional recognition through awards such as the Successful Planning Award (2007), South East Asia Properties Award (2014), SHEDA Excellence Awards (2017) and a Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) accolade in 2023 for the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre.
Also present at the event were Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, chairman of the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Fund Board Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, chairman of Amcorp Group Berhad Tan Sri Azman Hashim, and other dignitaries.– DayakDaily
