KUCHING, Oct 6: Sibu police have detained an individual involved in a viral video showing a car colliding with a motorcycle, causing the rider to fall.

In a statement on Sunday (Oct 5), Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident—captured in a 1-minute and 29-second video—likely occurred along Jalan Oya near SMK St Elizabeth, where the driver fled the scene after crashing into a motorcycle and proceeded to hit several other vehicles in the area.

Upon apprehension of the individual, a preliminary urine screening test revealed that the suspect tested positive for amphetamine.

As a result, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Sibu District Police Headquarters has opened an investigation paper under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving on a public road.

Upon conviction, the driver could face a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000, in addition to being suspended from holding a driving licence for a period of not less than two years.

At the same time, police are also conducting an investigation under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 following the positive urine test for amphetamine. This section carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both, upon conviction.

“We advise the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could disrupt the investigation, and to allow the police space to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation,” he said. — DayakDaily
