Sibu Bomba lodges police report over prank calls

SIBU, May 10: Individuals making prank calls to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), especially during this dry season may be charged in court.

Bomba Zone 4 Sibu chief Andy Alie said today that making a prank call is a serious offense that can be prosecuted under Section 233 (2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The Section provides for a fine of not more than RM50,000 or jail time of not more than one year, or both if convicted.

Andy disclosed that his department had received two fake calls recently.

“We received two false emergency calls last Monday (May 8) which caused complications to our Sibu Central and Sungai Merah stations,” he said.

The first prank call was received at 9.53pm on May 8, stating that there was a fire in Hulu Lanang while the second call claimed there was a longhouse fire in Pasai Siong at 5.53pm the same day.

“We found that both calls were made from the same phone number and we have made a police report for further investigation and action,” he said.

So far, Bomba Zone 4 has recorded four false calls to date, as compared to only one false call last year. — DayakDaily
