KUCHING, July 27: Sarawak Housing And Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) Kuching chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok supports the Labour Recalibration Programme (RTK) 2.0 announced by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala yesterday.
Sim said the exercise is a progressive way to solve the issue of illegal workers working in 3D (dangerous, dirty and difficult) jobs.
He added that this programme helps to resolve Sarawak’s labour shortage and can increase the supply in 3D sectors that need the workers and where local labour is not keen on being employed.
“It helps our State government to have a more comprehensive record of all the foreign workers in Sarawak. On a humanitarian basis, these illegal workers can work here with their legal rights protected when they are recalibrated,” he said in a statement.
Sim went on to say that RTK 2.0 would also help to reduce costs as employers have to register their workers directly with the Immigration and Labour Department in Sarawak.
“These employers do not have to use agents to register these foreign workers, and illegal workers in Sarawak can be registered and hired in the 3D sectors from 16 approved countries.
“With RTK 2.0 and more easing of the regulations, hopefully our labour requirements or human capital needed to achieve our developed State by 2030 can be attained within the set time period,” said Sim. — DayakDaily
