Sg Kayan boat tragedy: Body of last missing student found 100m from capsize site

KUCHING, Aug 22: The body of Alsma Jithil, the last missing student from the boat capsizing incident in Sungai Batang Kayan near Kampung Selampit, Lundu, was found early this morning.

In a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the victim’s body was discovered floating upstream.

“The body was found at 6.38am by the villagers, floating 100 metres from the incident site.

“The body was then retrieved by the Sarawak Coast Guard,” read the statement.

Alsma was one of three students from SMK Senibong who went missing after a boat capsized on Aug 20.

The body of 15-year-old Vilkie Wilson was found floating 10 metres from the search and rescue (SAR) operation control post by villagers yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, the body of the second missing victim, Helena Fasha Petrus, 16, was found floating approximately one kilometre downstream from the capsize site by villagers yesterday afternoon.

The boat, which capsized while crossing the river from Kampung Selampit at approximately 6.10am on Tuesday (Aug 20), was carrying about 20 passengers, including 16 students, four adults, and a motorcycle. — DayakDaily
