KUCHING, Dec 6: An unemployed 66-year-old man was today sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and a stroke of the rotan after he pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Jason Juga to having sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.
Accused Wan Pandi Wan Dan, from Sebuyau, was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children 2017 for physical sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl on Nov 25, 2018, between 2am and 2.30pm at Kampung Pasir Pandak.
In his mitigation, Wan Pandi appealed for leniency by stating that this was his first offence and that he is 66-years-old. In addition, he claimed to have a heart problem, diabetes and high blood pressure and also needs to take medication daily.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Haffiza Jemali, however, asked for a deterrent sentence as this is a serious offence involving a child aged 13. Haffiza added that a deterrent sentence would be perceived by the public that the court is serious about such an offence. — DayakDaily
