Severe fire damages two factories at Bintawa Industrial Estate

Firefighters working to contain the fire at two factories in Bintawa Industrial Estate.

KUCHING, Sept 10: Two factories, one empty while the other was used for storage, at Jalan Gedung, Bintawa Industrial Estate caught fire this morning.

The state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre received a distress call at 7.10am that a building located just behind the Malaysian Customs Department was on fire.

Bomba Kuching chief PgKB I Henderi Ardimansyah said said 20 firefighters and one water tanker from Tabuan Jaya, Padungan and Petra Jaya stations were despatched to the scene, where they successfully brought the fire under control at 8.50am.


The whole operation ended at 2pm.

Initial investigations revealed that the fire started from an empty factory building and later spread to the adjacent factory.

Both are one-storey buildings on permanent structures and confined spaces, located about two metres apart from each other.

Henderi disclosed that it was estimated 80 per cent of the premises were damaged in the incident.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. — DayakDaily
