KUCHING, Sept 26: Several roads in central Kuching will be temporarily closed from 7am to noon on Oct 10 as Padang Merdeka hosts the parade, mass rally ceremony and People’s Concert in conjunction with the 80th birthday celebration of Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the measures were necessary to ensure the smooth running of the celebration and traffic flow in the city centre.
The affected roads are Lebuh Temple to Lebuh Wayang (Wisma Pelita), Jalan Main Bazaar to Lebuh Temple, Lebuh Wayang to Jalan Main Bazaar, and Jalan Gambier to Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
Ahead of the celebration, Jalan McDougall will be temporarily closed from 10am on Sept 28 through midnight on Oct 10 to allow installation and preparation works, followed by the removal of logistical equipment after the programme.
Meanwhile, rehearsals will involve several roads from Oct 5 to 7, between 7am and 11am, including Jalan McDougall, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Wawasan and the section of Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg near Carpenter Street.
A full rehearsal will then be held on Oct 8 from 7am to 11am, affecting Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan McDougall and Jalan Wawasan leading to Padang Merdeka.
“Members of the public attending the celebration are advised not to park their vehicles along the road shoulders,” Alexson said in a statement today.
He also advised road users to plan their journeys early and use alternative routes to avoid congestion in the affected areas.
