KUCHING, Nov 19: Seven teachers recruited under the Sarawak Special Teacher Intake initiative have resigned, while another 51 failed to report for duty, the Sarawak Education Department has confirmed.

Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli told Suara Sarawak that the main reasons cited were receiving other job offers, declining the placement, and personal issues.

“As of November 2025, Sarawak has received a total of 1,219 teachers under the special intake initiative, with 957 placed in primary schools and 262 in secondary schools,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Nov 17).

He added that projected teacher placements as of November 2025 have significantly reduced staffing gaps across schools in Sarawak, bringing the overall staffing rate to 98.59 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MoE) is conducting a comprehensive assessment to determine why some new teachers, who were supposed to report for duty last Monday, did not do so.

In a TVS news today, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry is currently gathering a full picture of the registration process as part of efforts to immediately address the nationwide teacher shortage.

She stressed that although the number involved is small, the matter is being taken seriously.

“They only registered last Monday and we need some time to look at the overall causes, reasons, and so on.

“There may be personal reasons or matters that the ministry needs to take note of as to why this happened,” she said.

Fadhlina, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nibong Tebal, added that to date, more than 98 per cent or about 53,000 of teacher positions nationwide have been filled under the Madani government. — DayakDaily
