Seven suspects remanded three days as police probe gang fight over debt repayment

SIBU, June 22: Seven persons who were arrested in connection with a gang fight over a debt at Sungai Merah yesterday will have to cool their heels in police custody over the next few days.

The Magistrate’s Court here today ordered the suspects aged between 19 to 42 be remanded for three days to assist investigation.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said at about 4.30pm yesterday, the 23-year-old complainant went to a car accessories shop at Jalan Sungai Merah as a friend would be sending his four-wheel drive (4WD) pickup there for repairs.

“While waiting for his friend, he suddenly saw a group of men fighting. One of the men however took a spanner and smashed all the windows of his car,” he said.

The suspect had also damaged the right front door of the car and punctured a tyre resulting in total damages amounting to RM3,000.

Fearing for his safety, the complainant and his friend fled the scene. They later lodged a police report which led to the arrests of the seven suspects.

Stanley said the fight broke out between the men after negotiation over the repayment of a debt failed.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting. ā€” DayakDaily
