Seven-day remand for Pui Kaw and wife over shootout case

MIRI, Sept 20: ‘Pui Kaw’, the third suspect in the Taman Jelita shootout cum robbery, and his wife, have been remanded for seven days to facilitate police investigations.

The 37-year-old suspect, Ng Cheng Hui alias Pui Kaw, and his 22-year-old wife, were nabbed by the Miri Criminal Investigation department (CID) on Thursday (Sept 19) morning, around 5.15am in a house at Pujut Corner, here.


Pui Kaw has been hiding from the police for four months before the arrest.

He was the third suspect in a shootout incident with a police mobile vehicle (MPV) officers on May 16 at Taman Jelita, in which one officer was injured.

The remand order was meted out by Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie.

The accused and his wife, who were unrepresented, will be produced at the Magistrate’s Court here on Sept 26.

On the day of the incident (May 16), three masked men armed with guns had crashed onto a gate of a house with a BMW car in their robbery attempt at Jalan Pahlawan 3, Taman Jelita.

They held a family of four, including a female maid and a boy aged four, for nearly 30 minutes before a MPV unit arrived at the scene at 1.30pm.

One of the suspects were reportedly shot on his leg during the exchange fires with the cops at the scene. At least 10 shots were reportedly discharged during the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, Section 8 of the corrosive and explosive substances and offensive weapons Act 1958, Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1953 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempting murder. — DayakDaily
