KUCHING, March 28: The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (HASiL) has issued a warning to taxpayers with outstanding tax arrears, cautioning that they may face travel restrictions preventing them from leaving the country if their dues remain unpaid.

In a statement today, HASiL reminded taxpayers to check their tax status before planning any overseas trips, particularly during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday season.

Under Section 104 and 75A of the Income Tax Act 1967 and Section 22 of the Real Property Gains Tax Act 1976, the agency is authorised to bar individuals and company directors from travelling abroad if they have unresolved tax liabilities.

“Travel restrictions are a last resort imposed after multiple reminders and notices have been issued,” the statement said.

Taxpayers should check their outstanding tax arrears through the MyTax portal at https://mytax.hasil.gov.my and verify their travel restriction status on the Immigration Department’s portal at https://sspi.imi.gov.my.

To lift the restriction, affected taxpayers must either make full payment or contact the relevant HASiL office to negotiate an installment plan.

Applications for travel restriction cancellations can also be made online via the e-Travel Restriction service on MyTax, provided that the taxpayer meets four conditions: they are a Malaysian citizen, have fully settled their tax arrears, the restriction falls under the Income Tax Act 1967, and they are not listed as a company director under travel restrictions.

Further information is available on HASiL’s website, or taxpayers can seek assistance through the HASiL Contact Centre at 03-8911 1000 or by visiting the nearest HASiL office.

As Malaysians prepare for the festive season, HASiL extended its Hari Raya Aidilfitri greetings to all Muslims and urged taxpayers to manage their tax obligations promptly to avoid disruptions to their travel plans.

For any inquiries or assistance, taxpayers may reach out to HASiL through the Hasil Contact Centre (HCC) at 03-8911 1000 or 603-8911 1000 (for overseas callers), HASiL Live Chat, or the official feedback portal at https://maklumbalaspelanggan.hasil.gov.my/Public/. — DayakDaily
