KUCHING, April 11: Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), Sarawak Energy’s retail and operations arm, in collaboration with the police, have uncovered another case of electricity theft involving cryptocurrency mining in Sibu, this time at a three-storey shophouse in Jalan Jerrwit Barat.

According to a press release, this followed two similar incidents at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce recently.

“Investigations revealed that electricity was being illegally tapped directly from the incoming mains wiring, bypassing proper metering and safety systems.

“The concealed connection along the five-foot way of the premises was used to power 12 cryptocurrency mining servers. The theft resulted in estimated monthly losses of RM7,900 due to unbilled electricity consumption,” said the press release.

During the operation, all illegal direct tapping cables were dismantled, and a police report was lodged. The property owner will be called in to assist with investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries a fine of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.

Sarawak Energy explained that cryptocurrency mining uses large amounts of electricity, which can overload the power system and cause outages, adding that stealing electricity can lead to fires, electric shocks, and damage to electrical wiring and equipment.

“SESCO continues to remind property owners to monitor their tenants’ activities and ensure they comply with electricity regulations. Landlords can also be held accountable if illegal power connections are found on their premises.

“Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activities related to power theft. Reports can be made anonymously through SESCO’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111, or by emailing customercare@sarawakenergy.com.” — DayakDaily
