KUCHING, April 8: Sri Aman and Serian divisions have officially been declared as African Swine Fever (ASF) disease control areas in Sarawak.
Modernisation of Agriculture And Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this was due to Indonesian media reports on an ASF outbreak in West Kalimantan.
“At the same time, village pigs in Kampung Mapu Kijabu and Kampung Daha Kisau in Serian Division were confirmed positive for ASF by the Sarawak Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory,” he said in a statement today.
The minister further reminded pig farmers to tighten the biosecurity of their respective farms to prevent ASF from spreading further.
“Giving food waste that may be contaminated with ASF to pigs should be stopped as there have been many proven cases of infection through this method.
“The public is also advised to stop hunting wild boars near the border,” he added.
He also said that pork supply is adequate for the upcoming Gawai Dayak.
ASF is a highly contagious disease that affects all pigs and is not a threat to human health as it cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans. — DayakDaily
