KUCHING, July 25: The Chinese community in Serian is calling for the establishment of a night market at the historic Baki Bazaar, hoping to emulate the thriving and popular Siniawan night market in Bau.
Located just a 15-minute drive from Serian town off the Pan Borneo Highway, Baki Bazaar is a century-old settlement known for its unique character, rich cultural heritage, and warm, welcoming community, according to Serian District Council (SDC) chairman Dato Peter Minos.
“Locals proudly boast of Baki’s culinary excellence, with many residents from nearby Bidayuh villages such as Kampung Taee and Kampung Bunga frequenting the bazaar daily for breakfast and lunch,” he said in a statement today.
The idea to transform Baki Bazaar into a night market hub was mooted and agreed upon during a meeting today between the SDC and Chinese community leaders, led by their Temenggong.
“The proposal received overwhelming support from everyone present. There was real excitement and enthusiasm about the potential of the Baki Night Market, not only as a social attraction but as a new source of income for local food vendors,” he emphasised.
Peter said the council will work hand-in-hand with Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Tarat assemblyman Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn to ensure the successful development of the Baki Night Market, modelled closely after the Siniawan example, which has grown into a vibrant tourism and community hub. — DayakDaily
