KUCHING, Sept 22: Seni Kita is set to captivate art enthusiasts with a weekend of cultural submersion through two captivating art exhibitions to be held at HAUS KCH as part of its ‘Weekend: Subcultures Programme’ on September 23-24.
This two-day extravaganza will showcase contemporary and modern artworks by talented artists and contributors from all four regions of Borneo, namely Sabah, Kalimantan, Sarawak, and Brunei.
Altered Natives:The first exhibition, titled “Altered Natives,” is a contemporary art exhibition featuring new and unreleased visual works by a group of renowned artists. The lineup includes Elroy Ramantan from Brunei, Sang Tukang from Sabah, and Sarawak’s very own talents like Marcos Kueh, Reef, T.Bagak, Tuh Dek, and Zakaria Pangaribuan from Kalimantan. This exhibition is curated by T.Bagak, who is not only a designer but also a featured artist in “Altered Natives.”
Roots and Remixes:The second exhibition, “Roots and Remixes,” is a fusion of art that explores the concept of subcultures from both traditional and modern perspectives. The exhibition features the works of Jasmine Dadi (Curator and Multi-disciplinary Artist), Pici Pamg (Curator and Mixed Media Artist), Jocelyn Sim (Production Designer), Nagaia and Mira Hector (Tattoo Artists), Leon Noel (Mixed Media Artist), and Adrian Jo Milang (Cultural Practitioner). This unique exhibition is curated by Jasmine Dadi, Steff Fleur, Pici Pamg, and Asyilah Tan, with contributions from Catriona Maddocks.
In addition to the art exhibitions, the weekend festival will host more than 20 creative vendors offering a variety of products and services related to art, food, and drinks through the Pasar Seni Kita segment.
The event will also feature a range of activities, including a brass cuff making workshop by the celebrated artist duo Sang Tukang, cross-disciplinary discourse on subcultures in the form of the online Tuak Talk series, a culinary art showcase called “Earthly Delights: Shake and Twist,” a rooftop performance by Ezra Tekola of At Adau, an open mic session called “Hear Me Out,” a mixed-martial arts demonstration by FightX, a drum battle featuring drummers from Sarawak Drum Community, and a dance party by Raminari, a dance collective emphasizing funk music and delectable cuisine.
