KUCHING, Sept 21: Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim has proposed the establishment of a ‘Voluntary Service’ with minimum pay of two to five years to enhance the number of security personnel, especially to stregthen security at the borders, with the option to transition into full military service.
Debating the Mid-Term Review of 12th Malaysia Plan, Ahmad proposed this in view of the paramount importance of national security and sovereignty, particularly in light of the burgeoning development of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, near East Kalimantan.
This new development, he explained, which is geographically adjacent to Sarawak and Sabah, makes border security a pressing concern.
“When we talk about the sub-regional situation, whether we like it or not, we have to look at the geopolitical implications. Focus should be given to enhance command and control posts at Sarawak’s border regions.
“The same goes for assets and security personnel. Obsolete assets and equipment must be improved or replaced with the latest technology,” he said in Parliament today.
Furthermore, Ahmad believes that the proposed voluntary service could pique the interest of individuals, both young and old, in pursuing careers in the military.
This initiative, he added, could potentially address the issue of unemployment by providing participants with valuable experience in various fields such as medicine, engineering, telecommunications, and culinary arts, in addition to the standard disciplines of the armed forces.
“When they finish their voluntary service, it will be easy for them to find a job because they already have experienced in diverse fields and disciplines,” he pointed out.
Additionally, Ahmad stressed the importance of ensuring that the development of Sarawak and Sabah remains on par with sub-regional advancements with significant investments should be concentrated in the Borneo region. — DayakDaily
