Selangau showdown between Rita and Baru

Rita (second right) and Baru exchange handshakes at the nomination centre for Selangau.

SELANGAU, April 28: It is a straight fight in Selangau where Barisan Nasional-Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s (BN-PRS) Rita Insol will face off with Pakatan Harapan-Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PH-PKR) Baru Bian.

Rita was chosen to represent PRS after the party sacked its deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, the Selangau incumbent.

The lawyer, who hails from Rumah William Bansa of Selangau is a new face for PRS.

The 56-year-old has a Bachelor of Law (Hons) from Malaya University and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

It is the hope of the party to make her the first Dayak woman Parliamentarian.

Selangau has become a hot seat after Baru, the state PKR chief announced his own candidacy in the area.

Baru, a lawyer who has been helping the Dayaks on native customary rights (NCR) land issues, is an Orang Ulu from the highlands of Ba’ kelalan.

His chance of winning in Selangau is seen as uncertain as Selangau is a predominantly Iban area with more than 95 per cent of its voters comprising Ibans. — DayakDaily
