KUCHING, March 31: A Covid-19 positive security personnel of a government premises at Jalan Kingsway in Miri has spread the virus to 50 other people, thus sparking a new workplace cluster dubbed the Jalan Kingsway Cluster.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, revealed that the index case or Case 13,157 is a 54-year-old local man who worked as an enforcement personnel on the premises.
His infection was detected via symptomatic screening at Miri Hospital on March 17. Further investigation revealed that he could have been infected from the community.
Active case detection and screening conducted on close contacts, family members and casual contacts yielded 50 more positive cases.
As of today, a total of 384 individuals have undergone the first swab tests whereby 173 tested negative while 160 are awaiting lab tests results.
Jalan Kingsway is one of three new clusters declared in Sarawak today. The other two are Bulatan Aman Cluster in Sibu which is linked to a workplace with 43 cases and Jalan Baji Cluster in Sarikei which is a community cluster with 20 cases.
With these new clusters, the number of active clusters in Sarawak has risen to 36.
Meanwhile, Sarawak reported one Covid-19 fatality in Sibu and 176 new cases with Sibu topping the list of daily infections at 30 cases followed by Kuching (29), Bintulu (25), Miri (19), Sarikei (13), Serian (11), Beluru (10), Meradong (8), Kapit and Matu (6 each), Julau, Samarahan and Sri Aman (5 each) while Marudi, Saratok and Simunjan had one each.
This thus increased the state’s tally of positive cases to 16,390 and death toll to 108. — DayakDaily
