KUCHING, Nov 7: The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) has recognised Sarawak’s growing potential in the national capital market, noting that discussions are underway on the possible listing of Sarawak Energy within the next two years as part of the State’s broader strategy to expand the participation of its government-owned companies.
SC chairman Dato Mohammad Faiz Azmi said he had met with the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to discuss the matter, following recent media reports about the State energy giant’s potential listing.
“We came to confirm that the plan is indeed being considered and to explore whether there are other Sarawak-owned assets that could also be listed.
“We also discussed the Premier’s wider plans involving government-linked companies that may enter the market in the future,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report today.
Mohammad Faiz spoke during a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today.
He added that the meeting also covered financing strategies for Sarawak’s major infrastructure projects, some of which are already tapping into Malaysia’s capital market.
“To date, the total value of Malaysia’s capital market stands at around RM4.1 trillion, and we are now visiting different states to see whether they are interested in leveraging this market more actively, whether through listings or bond issuances,” he said.
The SC chairman further revealed that the meeting touched on Sarawak’s proposed carbon levy framework and its alignment with federal policies, as well as the regulatory implications for bodies such as the SC.
“In many other jurisdictions, carbon credits are categorised as securities and regulated by bodies like ours. Hence, we also discussed Sarawak’s approach to managing this emerging area,” he added.
Mohammad Faiz praised Sarawak’s clear and consistent development vision, describing it as firmly rooted in long-term planning and sustainability.
Also present were SC executive director of Strategic Communications Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hamid, chief sustainability officer Neetasha Rauf, and SC director Shahrul Amry Abd Malek. — DayakDaily
