Search underway for Myanmar national missing after falling into Rajang River

SARIKEI, Oct 22: A crew member of a ship has gone missing after falling overboard into the Rajang River near Susur Jambu Wharf in Sarikei this morning.

The victim was identified as Min Wai Lin, 45, a foreign national from Myanmar.

According to a report by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), they received a call regarding the incident at 9.30am before despatching a team of firefighters from Sarikei Fire Station (BBP) to the scene.

According to witnesses, the ship was approaching the jetty around 6.12am when the victim was seen falling overboard.

Immediate attempts to rescue the victim, including throwing a life ring buoy and lowering a rescue boat into the river, were unsuccessful, and the victim disappeared beneath the water.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation was activated to locate the victim using the water surface searching technique within a 1-kilometer radius of the fall site.

The operation is supported by other agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), and the Marine Police. — DayakDaily
