Search underway for Myanmar national falling into river at Sejingkat Terminal

KUCHING, Dec 16: A search and rescue (SAR) operation is underway to locate a Myanmar national who fell into the river at Sejingkat Terminal early yesterday morning (Dec 15).

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the victim was identified as 49-year-old Win Kyaw Paik.

The incident occurred at approximately 12.10am when the victim, a crew member of a container ship, reportedly fell while crossing a bridge leading to the vessel.

The information was relayed to Bomba by a security guard at the terminal.

Bomba received a distress call at 12.56am and dispatched a team from the Tabuan Jaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.

SAR efforts commenced at 9.48am with surface searching conducted within a 500-meter radius of the last known location, using an aluminium boat manned by two personnel.

The search was extended at 1.00pm with another aluminium boat and a team of three personnel who searched up to the barrage, covering approximately two kilometres before pausing at 2.30pm.

The operation resumed at 3.50pm with three personnel conducting searches within an 800-meter radius of the vessel.

At the request of the ship manager, the vessel was moved to facilitate the detection of the victim beneath it.

In the afternoon, the Police Air Unit deployed a drone team with two officers to assist in the search.

Despite comprehensive efforts by multiple agencies, the victim has yet to be located.

The SAR operation is expected to resume at 7am today. – DayakDaily
