KUCHING, June 7: A search is underway for a man who went missing while swimming in a river in Baram with his family on Saturday (June 6).

In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 12.30am today, and firefighters from the Marudi station were deployed.

Based on the chronology of events, the victim’s wife said the incident occurred at around 3.30pm in the Baram River near Kampung Long Lama on June 6.

The victim, 37-year-old Maxwell Laing Michael, was reported to have swam towards the centre of the river when he began to struggle, flailing his arms before submerging and disappearing beneath the surface. He did not reappear.

The incident was witnessed by his wife, their child, and 15 residents.

The search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out by firefighters with assistance from the Long Lama police station and 20 villagers, and will resume tomorrow (June 8). — DayakDaily
