Search for two boys swept by river current in Sibu to continue tomorrow (May 14)

KUCHING, May 13: Day 2 of the search and rescue (SAR) operation for two boys swept by the river current near Durin Bazaar in Sibu came to an end and will continue tomorrow (May 14).

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak operation centre, the operation started at 9am today and covered a 2-kilometre radius using the water surface method until 12pm.

After resuming the operation at 2pm, Bomba Water Rescue Team (PPDA) conducted a dive where the victims were last seen within a 10-square-meter radius before changing back to surface searching.


The operation was halted at 5.30pm after the victims had yet to be found and will resume tomorrow.

On May 12, Bomba Sibu received a call at 5.34pm from an informant reporting the drowned victims at a river near Durin Bazaar. As a result, firefighters from Sibujaya station were deployed to the location.

Based on the chronology of the cases, the two victims were playing and taking a bath with their friend in the river before being swept by the river current.

Both were last seen about 10 metres from the nearby jetty, while their friend was reported to be safe. — DayakDaily
