KUCHING, Sept 28: Sarawak aims to use its role as co-host of the SEA Games 2027 to showcase high standards of sports governance while ensuring the infrastructure, expertise and systems developed continue supporting the sector beyond the Games.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said hosting the regional sporting event would give Sarawak an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to manage a major sporting event while strengthening governance standards within the sector.
“The success of a sporting event does not only depend on the efficiency of its organisation. It is also measured by the fairness of competitions, proper treatment of participants, responsible management of resources, as well as public confidence in the system underpinning the event,” he said.
He said this in his speech read by Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the Sarawak National Sports Integrity Conference 2026 at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here today.
He described the SEA Games 2027 as an opportunity for Sarawak to demonstrate governance and integrity standards that could form the foundation for the future of sports in the State.
“In this context, the SEA Games 2027 not only give us the opportunity to host a major sporting event, but also serve as a platform to showcase governance and integrity standards that should form the foundation for the future of sports in Sarawak,” he said.
He said the facilities, expertise, coaches and systems developed in preparation for the Games should continue benefiting Sarawak’s sports sector after the event concludes.
He also highlighted the role of sports development in shaping young people who are disciplined, resilient and confident, while strengthening ties within communities.
“Through collaboration among sports organisations, government agencies, enforcement authorities, the private sector and international partners, we can strengthen sports integrity and address related challenges together,” he added. — DayakDaily
