SIBU, Aug 21: A resettlement housing scheme needs to be set up here to address rural-urban migration challenges.
“Perhaps Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU should assist to request from the government for the establishment of this housing scheme,” said Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan.
He said this at the Economic Development Seminar organised by SDNU Sibu together with the Sibu District Agriculture Department, Borneo MA Smart Vendors Sdn Bhd and DA Virtual Sdn Bhd at Rumah SDNU Sibu yesterday evening.
According to him, the majority of Dayak migrating to the town are still living in dilapidated houses such as along Jalan Tong Sang, Jalan Tiong Hua and Jalan Hua Kiew.
He said, the group is in dire need of housing assistance and a settlement site so that the issue mentioned earlier can be resolved.
“This is the big challenge that SDNU is facing to solve. SDNU needs to apply to the government to find land to create a settlement for the concerned group in a settlement that is specific to Iban only.
“There are no Iban representatives here, but we as representatives from districts or other places close to the city of Sibu are there. We can help if this matter is complicated to resolve to be brought to the attention of the State government, especially the Premier of Sarawak (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg),” he stressed.
Therefore, Lidam suggested that SDNU conduct a detailed survey of the Dayak community in the town who need housing assistance, especially for those who rent dilapidated houses in the said area.
“Collect the names and details of those who need domestic help. Then send it to the right channels for consideration by the concerned parties for appropriate assistance.
“SDNU should be a voice for them so that their problems can be extended to the right channel to enjoy the housing assistance provided by the government,” he added. — DayakDaily
