SIBU, Oct 7: Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu branch hopes that the Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS) for low-income families could be extended to four families whose rented houses in Kampung Sentosa burned down during a fire on Oct 4.
Its chairman Chambai Lindong in a statement said his branch was ready to assist the four families of 15 individuals to apply for the scheme.
Sarawak Housing Development Corporation is currently offering the Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS) for low-income families where each would be assisted with RM200 for 36 months.
Chambai also hoped that the government will come up with a housing scheme so that they can build a new house as soon as possible.
“They will take a long time to rebuild their lives. For now, they are staying temporarily with close relatives. They intend to build a new house but that is not an easy thing because they are not coming from a well-to-do family,” he said.
He also called on non-governmental organisations and political parties to provide assistance to the victims.
“Sìbu Welfare Department has sent aid to all the victims. It is hoped that many more NGOs and individuals will come forward to help reduce their burden,” he urged.
On the part of his branch, he said they had also provided basic necessities and financial assistance to the four families yesterday. — DayakDaily
