KUCHING, Jan 25: Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) further strengthens its Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by allowing only 30 persons in any ceremonial gathering and 20 at burial site.

In a statement today, SDMC tightened its rules further by reducing the number of attendants in any ceremonial gatherings.

“For areas under CMCO (conditional movement control order) and MCO (movement control order), a maximum of 30 persons are allowed to attend a function and a maximum 20 persons are allowed at burial site,” said SDMC.

On Jan 22, 2021, due to the surges in Covid-19 cases statewide, SDMC had ruled that only 50 people are allowed at wake at one time and 30 at burial sites in zones under CMCO.

SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas explained then that it was a tough decision but surges of Covid-19 cases were found to be related to such ceremonial events.

He stated that the authorities understood the emotional needs to attend such ceremonial gatherings, however, painful decision had to be made.

In return, the Deputy Chief Minister appealed for understanding from the public especially families of the deceased. — DayakDaily
