KUCHING, June 19: Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) and Borneo Laboratory are jointly organising a forum on Intellectual Property (IP) on June 25, from 9am to 4pm, at Think and Tink.

The forum entitled ‘The Understanding and Implementation of Intellectual Properties in the Ecosystem of Arts’ will discuss how the IP infringement issue is being gaslighted and the authenticity of works in the art and cultural scene is being neglected.

ā€œIt will serve as a stepping stone for the voices of those whose works have been stolen, taken, or benefitted from, as well as viewpoints on plagiarism from IP professionals, artists and the general public.

ā€œThe forum is also expected to address the broader cultural and policy context and to lay the groundwork for future progress,ā€ said SDEC and Borneo Laboratory in a joint press statement today.

The event will be divided into three sessions. The first is an empirical review session on common practices related to IP matters in Sarawak and Malaysia and how current practices impact the future development of the art and cultural scene.

The second session will share legal practitionersā€™ perspectives on the legal and policy framework, followed by a moderated discussion with practitioners from the previous session on the availability of legal tools and approaches to be explored.

The third and public question and answer session will cover topics such as assessing IP when granting funding for projects, raising IP awareness in the media and social media, emerging technology for IP protection (NFT), and the role of gender in IP conflict, among others.

The line-up panellists for the forum include Jennifer Linggi, Juvita Tatan Wan of Tuyang Initiative, Wendy Teo, Kevin Mark Low, Florence Lambert, Zaharah Malim, Jonah Lau, Daniel Lim, Yasmin Khalid Nicholls, Amirin Arsyan, and Gregory Wee.

The forum is open to the public, and those who wish to participate may RSVP via the Google link by June 24. ā€” DayakDaily
