KUCHING, July 2: The upgrading project of the scout campsite in Matang is expected to be tendered by September this year.
According to Sarawak Scouts Council (SSC) deputy president Datuk Mohamad Safri Abdillah, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has allocated some funds for the upgrading project with Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) as the implementing agency.
“The project is scheduled to be tendered up (open tender) very soon, so we will see a new camp probably by the end of 2025.
“We try to revive this ‘baruk’ (traditional Bidayuh longhouse), and then there will be a lot of other facilities like training facilities, hostels, campsites; and we are also going to have a hotel-like resort towards the other side overlooking the South China Sea. So those are the (new) major components of the camp,” he told reporters at Matang Warrior (Survivor) Trail Run 2023 held at the campsite near Kubah National Park today.
The camp is co-owned by SSC and the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia Sarawak Branch under the leadership of Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and Dato Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, respectively.
On July 2, 2022, Abang Johari announced a sum of RM12 million to upgrade the Camp during the Sarawak First Rover Moot at Kuching Waterfront.
Also present were Mawan and the Chief Scout Commissioner of Sarawak, Capt Zainuddin Hamdan. — DayakDaily
