School closure in Sarawak’s Covid-19 red zones extended to May 10

KUCHING, April 28: The closure of schools and education institutions located in Covid-19 red zone districts in Sarawak will be extended from May 4 until 10.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily update report on Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, however, informed that Form Six students who are sitting for ther Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) for third semester (replacement) are allowed to be physically present at schools until May 27.

SDMC emphasised that the decision was made after meeting with the State Health Department following Minister of Education Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin’s announcement that school sessions will be held online through home-based teaching and learning method (PdPR).


The Hari Raya celebrations fall on May 13 and 14 this year. After that, the school term holidays will begin from May 29 to June 13.

SDMC said that the closure will involve all education institutions under the Ministry of Education (MOE) and all categories of private education institutions registered with MOE including international schools.

Initially, schools in the red zones will be closed until May 4 following orders from Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on April 19 in taking measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in schools. — DayakDaily
