Sarawak’s Sukma 2024 victory proves ‘we are a force to be reckoned with’, Premier hails athletes as stars and pride

KUCHING, Sept 15: Sarawak’s glorious achievements at the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI 2024 have cemented its status as a force to be reckoned with, reaffirming its position as a sporting powerhouse in Malaysia.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg lauded the extraordinary efforts and dedication of Sarawak’s athletes during the Games, where Sarawak emerged as the overall champion.

He expressed immense pride in the athletes, coaches, and support teams for their relentless commitment to Sarawak’s dominant performance.

“You are the stars and our pride. Our athletes have trained hard, sacrificing time and energy to represent Sarawak with pride. They have not only bonded as a team but have also strengthened the unity of our entire Sarawak community,” he said during his speech at the ‘Incentive Presentation Ceremony for Sarawak Contingent Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024’, which took place last night (Sept 14) at a local hotel here.

The Premier also acknowledged the vital role of families in supporting the athletes, noting how their achievements had further strengthened family ties.

“Parents have been there every step of the way, encouraging their children. It’s not just family bonding; it’s Sarawak bonding,” he remarked.

Sarawak’s performance in the Games has also garnered national attention, with Abang Johari proudly sharing that even international observers have taken note.

“We’ve received feedback from various corners, even from Paris. People are now saying, ‘Sarawak is a force to be reckoned with,’” he stated.

Abang Johari also emphasised that Sarawak’s achievements extend beyond sports, reflecting on the region’s progress in various sectors, including technology and digital innovation, which have positioned it as a leader in Malaysia.

“Sarawak is known for its innovative spirit. Our advancements in hydrogen technology and digital infrastructure have caught the attention of people globally,” he added.

The Premier reiterated his commitment to supporting the growth of young talent in Sarawak, not only in sports but also in technology and other fields.

He emphasised that the Sarawak government will continue investing in nurturing future champions, aiming for success on both the national and global stage.

“I am confident that with continued hard work, we will produce world-class champions. This is not just about being village champions; we want to be champions of the world,” he stated.

Sarawak’s triumph at Sukma XXI has set a high benchmark, with the Premier expressed optimism that Sarawak will maintain its winning momentum in future editions of the games.

“Our journey is far from over, and I believe we are ready for even greater achievements,” he affirmed.

The event was attended by various dignitaries and officials, including Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Deputy Secretary (Operations) and Sukma XXI Sarawak chief executive officer (CEO) Datu Hii Chang Kee; Sarawak contingent chef de mission and Sarawak Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu; Para Sukma XXI Sarawak Main Committee chairman and Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
