KUCHING, Dec 31: Sarawak made significant gains in infrastructure, education and public services throughout 2025, laying a strong foundation for further socio-economic development in 2026, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.

In his New Year message, Abang Johari said the progress achieved this year reflected the State government’s focus on improving connectivity, access to basic amenities and human capital development to enhance the well-being of the people.

He highlighted the completion of more than 1,000 kilometres of new and upgraded roads, including main sections of the Pan Borneo Highway, which are now fully operational. He said the projects have improved road safety and significantly reduced travel time between urban centres and rural areas. Access to clean water, electricity and internet services has also expanded across the State.

“Throughout 2025, we witnessed clear progress in socio-economic development that has brought well-being to the people,” he said.

The Premier also pointed to advances in digital transformation, including the development of international-standard data centres, artificial intelligence initiatives and improvements in e-government systems to enhance public service delivery.

Looking ahead to 2026, Abang Johari said human capital development will remain a key priority, particularly through Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes, scholarships and the implementation of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme.

He said the introduction of free tertiary education beginning next year would ensure more Sarawakian students are able to pursue higher education without financial constraints.

To address cost of living concerns, the State government will continue the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) programme, with its allocation increased to RM640 million in 2026, he added.

Abang Johari also reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to environmental protection, including the conservation of forests and rivers, biodiversity preservation and the development of clean energy, while calling on Sarawakians of all races and religions to continue upholding unity and harmony.

“Our journey does not end here. The year 2026 promises more opportunities and development that we will realise together,” he said.

He added that 2026 will also see the launch of AirBorneo, which is expected to strengthen air connectivity, support tourism and trade growth, and improve mobility throughout the State. — DayakDaily
