KUCHING, Dec 18: Sarawak’s representation in the Federal Cabinet is more important than party affiliations, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says.
He was commenting on the recent Federal Cabinet reshuffle, which saw Mordi Bimol from DAP appointed Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Chiew Choon Man from PKR named Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
The Premier pointed out that what mattered most was that Sarawakians continue to hold positions at the Federal level, regardless of party affiliation.
“I thank the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for ensuring Sarawak continues to be represented in the Federal Cabinet.
“Although some of the appointments involve parties that are not part of the Sarawak government, the composition of the Federal Cabinet is the Prime Minister’s prerogative,” he said when met by reporters following the Sarawak Budget Conference 2026 here on Wednesday (Dec 17).
On another note, Abang Johari welcomed the appointment of Datuk Mustapha Sakmud as the new minister overseeing Sabah and Sarawak affairs, expressing hope that he would carry out his duties effectively for the benefit of both regions.
On Tuesday, Anwar announced the appointment of Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib (previously Deputy Economy Minister) as the Deputy Minister of Health, whose predecessor, Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni, is now the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports.
Miri MP Chiew Choon Man was appointed the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, with Sarikei MP Huang Tiong Sii as the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities. – DayakDaily
