MIRI, July 18: Sarawak’s artificial reef ball project has seen a threefold increase in fishermen’s catch in Mukah and Kuala Rajang, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said that Saribas and Lawas have also experienced an increase in their catch.
“This project has assisted the local fishermen as there is an increase in fish population ever since we placed the reef balls (in the waters),” he said during a press conference after the launching of six island-class patrol vessels and the Miri Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) headquarters today.
He also added that the increase in catch is also related to the Sarawak Coast Guards in tackling illegal trawling.
Earlier in his speech, he commented on Sarawak’s reef ball project being the world’s longest artificial reef. He said it contributed to the wealth of biodiversity in Sarawak’s waters and increased household income for the State’s fishing community.
“These are the benefits when we preserve what we have and develop using new methods,” he said at the event.
On July 10, the Reef Ball Foundation of the United States of America (USA) recognised the Sarawak Reef Ball Project as the world’s longest artificial reef project, stretching 746km. — DayakDaily
