KUCHING, June 8: Sarawak’s para athletes have won 11 gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze medals at the 12th Asean Para Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia so far.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK), Sarawak’s para athletes have contributed to and increased the Malaysian contingent’s gold medal collection.
On June 7, swimmer Fraidden Dawan of Bintulu, Sarawak successfully defended his gold medal in the men’s (S10) 200m individual medley event at the Morodok Techo Aquatic Centre, while swimmer Rusdianto Rusmadi took silver in the men’s (S8) 200m individual medley event and swimmer Muhammad Nur Syaiful Zulkafli took gold in the men’s (S5) 50m freestyle event with a personal record of 33.14.
To-date, the Malaysian contingent has captured 42 gold, 35 silver, and 26 bronze medals, with Sarawak’s para athletes contributing 11 gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze medals.
The Malaysian contingent’s goals are 33 gold, 51 silver, and 58 bronze medals. With this impressive performance, the contingent has surpassed its goal of 33 gold medals.
KPWK minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah was present at the aquatics centre to award medals, while KPWK deputy minister Mohd Razi Sitam presented official mascot plushies to winners. — DayakDaily
