KUCHING, Oct 2: The development of the new Kuching International Airport is currently in the evaluation phase, with a preliminary study underway.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stated that Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari will make an official announcement regarding the project’s next phase once preparations are complete.

“While I am aware of some details, it is the Premier’s responsibility to disclose the location, cost, and other specifics,” he said after officiating at ‘What About Kuching (WAK) 2024: Call of the Tribes Festival’ at the Old Courthouse on Tuesday (Oct 1).

Abdul Karim noted that multiple sites are being evaluated, considering critical factors such as surrounding terrain, wind conditions, and the strategic positioning of the airport.

“It is vital to identify the best location for this new development while taking all environmental factors into account,” he added.

Previously, Abang Johari revealed plans for an ambitious project to construct a new state-of-the-art international airport in Kuching, capable of accommodating 15 million passengers annually.

He emphasised that the new airport will feature a modern, fully automated design similar to Doha, ensuring a seamless and efficient experience for travellers.

The development is expected to take around three to five years to complete.

This project is a crucial step towards establishing a Sarawak-owned airline through the takeover of MASwings, projected to be finalised by the end of this year. The aim is to address high ticket prices during festive seasons and improve regional connectivity.

This initiative is viewed as a key strategy to enhance both tourism and business travel, making Sarawak more accessible to regional and international visitors.

The current Kuching International Airport is no longer able to accommodate the increasing volume of flights and passengers, and the new airport is part of Sarawak’s broader vision to become a regional aviation hub in Asean.
