KUCHING, Dec 15: Sarawak has secured in-principle approval to supply electricity to Peninsular Malaysia through Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), but the plan remains at an early stage, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof confirmed.
He also pointed out that technical studies and surveys involving Indonesia are still required before feasibility studies can begin.
“In principle, approval has been given. Technical studies and surveys with Indonesia need to be conducted before feasibility studies can begin.
“The tariffs have not yet been determined. Comprehensive studies must be conducted to assess the costs before any tariff negotiations can take place,” he said when met by reporters after the Ceria ke Sekolah TNB Petra Jaya Edition programme at a hotel here today.
On the ongoing undersea cable, Fadillah clarified that the costs would be borne separately, noting that Singapore would cover its own expenses, while the costs for the Peninsular would be handled by TNB and its partners.
He also noted that project studies have not started as Indonesia must first be informed, but expressed hope that progress could begin next year. He stressed, however, that the final timeline would depend on Indonesia’s approval. — DayakDaily
