KUCHING, Feb 1: Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, today criticised the social media news portal ‘Berita 757’, describing its reporting as “irresponsible and unethical” and a poor example for aspiring journalists.

Speaking to reporters after the Walk of Health programme, Abdullah said Berita 757 has long relied on unnamed sources, political analysts and observers, often publishing provocative reports that could stir public anxiety and misrepresent facts.

“I don’t know who is behind 757, but their reporting has been irresponsible for a long time.

“Qualified journalists would clearly state their sources and provide proper analysis but this portal ignores journalistic ethics and norms,” he said.

Abdullah noted that the portal’s recent reports, including those suggesting that Sabah and Sarawak leaders are greedy or arrogant, are a reflection of those behind the coverage.

He said Sabah and Sarawak have historically pursued negotiation and diplomacy with the federal government and have always acted responsibly in safeguarding the States’ interests.

“Provocations have escalated recently, but Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has advised us not to react to such tones. He prefers diplomacy and discussion over provocation,” he added.

Abdullah also highlighted ongoing legal matters concerning Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and oil and gas claims, stressing that the company itself brought the case to court and warning against assumptions of political influence.

“We should let the courts decide. Any assumptions or provocations outside the courtroom should be ignored. Petronas itself brought the case to court, not us,” he said.

He also touched on what he called a ‘political suspicion’ surrounding the PETRONAS case where some parties have speculated that the company’s legal actions, particularly over oil and gas claims, might have the blessing of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, given the latter’s role and influence under the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974.

On the role of federal authorities in regulating media ethics, Abdullah expressed concern over the continued operation of outlets like Berita 757 despite complaints.

He emphasised that the minister overseeing journalistic laws should ensure accountability and adherence to ethical standards.

“All statements and reports from Awesome TV through Berita 757 are half-baked at best. Some may even be generated through AI.

“In the world of journalism, Berita 757 is a clear example of how not to report—unethical, irresponsible and lacking integrity. Students across the country could study them as a negative example,” he said. – DayakDaily
