KUCHING, June 8: Sarawak’s carbon trade protocol will be established soon, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari, who is also the Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, said the implementation however, will dependso n the usage and availability of database technology.
āCurrently there are no established protocols for carbon trading, but there is already a baseline on how to calculate carbon storage and also its trading principle.
āAt the moment, Sarawak is working together with World Bank on the accounting principle on how to evaluate the value of the carbon we have stored,ā he told reporters when met after attending to Sarawak Level International Forest Day 2024 held at Sabal Forestry Reserves in Simunjan today.
Abang Johari added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been briefed on the matter because it involves international conventions involving government-to-government, and Sarawak is only a state government.
He also said that Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has been informed to upgrade the laws involving energy as well as carbon trading.
āWhat we need now is a trans-boundary protocol between countries, and the Federal government is supporting us on this,ā he added. ā DayakDaily
