KUCHING, Sept 28: Sarawak’s very own airline, AirBorneo, is expected to be operational by 2027 and could offer direct flights to Samarinda, East Kalimantan, to support athletes and travellers heading to the next Borneo Games.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this during the closing ceremony of the Borneo Games 2025 at Penview Convention Centre (PCC) Demak here this evening, hinting that the new State-owned airline will significantly enhance connectivity across the island.
“I believe that by 2027, Sarawak will already have its own airline, and we will fly to Samarinda,” he said, referring to East Kalimantan, which will host the next edition of the regional multi-sport event.
He also suggested the possibility of collaboration between AirBorneo and Royal Brunei Airlines to strengthen air links within Borneo.
“Perhaps we can work together with Royal Brunei Airlines to better connect the regions across Borneo,” he added.
Abang Johari also wished all athletes from neighbouring regions a safe journey home and encouraged them to continue training and preparing for the next Borneo Games in 2027.
In his speech earlier, Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced that the next Borneo Games will be hosted by East Kalimantan in Samarinda in 2027.
He explained that the decision came after discussions were held yesterday (Sept 27), during which it was revealed that the East Kalimantan Governor, Dr H. Rudi Mas’ud, had expressed strong interest in taking up the role as organiser. — DayakDaily
