KUCHING, July 22: Malaysian Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called upon Sarawakians to continue to fight for freedom although the State has already achieved its independence 60 years ago.
He believed that the 60th anniversary of Sarawak’s Independence celebration requires each Sarawakian to equally appreciate the hardships of the previous leaders and understand the meaning of this independence.
“The true meaning of independence is not only limited to freedom from colonialism as it also includes the efforts of each of us to free ourselves, the community and the country from more challenging issues such as the shackles of poverty, education, economy, social, development and many more.
“This effort cannot be realised if we are still stuck in the old mindset. Ruyung (shell) needs to be broken if we want to move forward,” he said in a Sarawak Day message today.
Nanta, who is also Kapit MP and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general also reminded Sarawakians not to forget the services and contributions of past leaders and pioneers.
“Our previous warriors not only sacrificed themselves on the battlefield, but they also looked ahead, pioneered and fought for the fate of the children of Sarawak in various perspectives including economic, educational, social, health, sports and so on.
“Now, it’s all up to us to continue to this struggle to a higher level. If not us, who else?” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
