KUCHING, Sept 7: A Sarawakian police officer was shot and stabbed by a suspect during a crime prevention patrol early this morning, which also led to the discovery of a woman’s body in a car in Simpang Pulai, Perak.
Perak Police Commissioner Dato Noor Hisam Nordin in a statement said the incident happened at about 1.15am when a patrol team from Simpang Pulai Police Station detected a suspicious vehicle in Taman Desa Pakatan.
When officers attempted to stop the car, the suspect sped off, sparking a chase that ended in an oil palm plantation. A struggle broke out during the arrest attempt.
“In the incident, a policeman was shot in the stomach after the suspect managed to seize his service pistol.
“The victim was also stabbed before the suspect escaped with the firearm,” Noor Hisam said.
The injured officer, a Sarawakian who is married to a fellow Sarawakian and has two young children, is reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh.
Upon further inspection of the suspect’s car, police discovered the body of an unidentified woman in the back seat. A post-mortem will be conducted at HRPB’s Forensic Unit to establish her identity and cause of death.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 and Section 307 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
Police are intensifying efforts to track down the suspect and urged anyone with information to contact investigating officer ASP Fadli Ahmad at 012-2500019.
“PDRM will not compromise with any parties involved in such serious crimes and efforts are being stepped up to ensure the suspect is caught immediately,” Noor Hisam stressed. — DayakDaily
