KUCHING, Sept 19: Clinician researcher of Clinical Research Centre Sarawak General Hospital Dr Diana Foo has been named one of the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Award winners for 2023.
In a social media post, Dr Foo said she was honoured to be named as a high achiever, along with big names such as Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Datuk Nicole David, Datuk Cheah Soon Kit and Datuk Siti Nurhalizah, who had previously received the same recognition for their remarkable accomplishments and contributions.
Dr Foo, who had received this award under the category of Academic Leadership and/or Accomplishment, said the year 2023 has been a special year for her as this is her 10th anniversary in her clinician research career and 14th year as a medical doctor.
This is also the year that she was selected by World Heart Federation as one of the 25 emerging leaders as well as a winner of Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology Young Investigator Awards.
“Unlike the clinical specialist career path, the clinician research career path is full of uncertainties when one embarks on the journey. Nevertheless, I chose to pursue clinical research career (out of passion) while still staying within a MoH (Ministry of Health) hospital where I be closer to patients. This is (an unconventional) path that not many had pursued before me.
“Of course it’s challenging; it involves much trial-and-error and there are many hurdles, ups and downs. I’m thankful for the platform that provides me freedom and space to build research interest.
‘My definition of success means less of ‘me’, and more of ‘us’, such as less unhealthy competition and more collaborations,” said Foo during the 2023 Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award Night held in Johor Baru on Sept 16. — DayakDaily
